Katie and Andrew’s Lains Barn Wedding

Lains Barn wedding

“Thank you so much, you’ve really captured the day as we remembered it and it’s lovely to see some of the things we didn’t get a chance to see as we were getting swept along.”

Katie and Andrew’s Lains Barn wedding was such a wonderful day, filled to the brim with love and laughter. These are the only two ingredients needed in my opinion. Great weather helps of course, as does a stunning setting. Thankfully Katie and Andrew had both of these, too.

The day started with bridal preparations at Barton House, just up the road from Lains Barn. After several fun-filled hours it was over to Lains Barn for the ceremony. If there’s one thing that my 7 years as a documentary wedding photographer has taught me, it’s that weddings tend to throw up all sorts of curve balls. This wedding was no exception. Minutes after arriving at the Barn I somehow managed to get a wasp caught between my finger and camera. The wasp obviously panicked and proceeded to stick his stinger deep into my finger; a first for me at a wedding. A quick flick of the wasp got rid of the cheeky chap but his stinger remained. With only minutes to go until Katie arrived to walk down the aisle I had no choice but to wait until after the ceremony to dig the stinger out.

The rest of the day went without a hitch and after some games in the garden it was back into the the barn for dinner, speeches and some absolutely brilliant dancing! These guys LOVE to dance. I was even treated to a special performance of Michael Jackson’s Thriller; another first for me at a wedding.

Katie and Andrew, your Lains Barn wedding was 100% totally incredible – thank you so much for letting me capture the day for you! For everyone else, here are some highlights from their day.

Documentary Wedding Photography Roundup

Best Documentary Wedding Photographer

“A heartfelt thank you to each and every couple who invited me to capture their day”

I remember when I first started shooting weddings; the buzz I would get every time an enquiry came in, the happiness I felt when that enquiry turned into a booking and the butterflies in my stomach on my way to the actual wedding. All these years later and I still get those same feelings.

2014 was an incredible year. Not only did it see the birth of our fourth child, Isla, as a documentary wedding photographer I got to travel around the country, meeting some amazing people and spending my days telling stories with my camera. I photographed weddings large and small, weddings across the country, weddings down the road as well an incredible 60th birthday party that I’ll never forget.

Rosie and Tom, Stella and Sen, Katherine and Olly, Sonia and Daniel, Lou and James, Juliet and Christian, Caron and Jonathan, Cat and Alastair, Kate and Nick, Nicola and Andrew, Polly and Matt, Lindsay and Nick, Prriya and Mark, Sarah and Spencer, Abi and Mat, Emma and Simon, Louisa and Graeme, Karen and Neil, Emily and Richard, Lauretta and Andrew, Moss and Mark, Jemma and Graeme, Lucy and Ash, Sara and Adam, Louise and Lucy, Kate and James, Yvonne and David, Kathryn and Ben, Tessa and Andy, Sarah and Dan, Melanie and Rob, Kayleigh and Matt, Laura and Philip, Hannah and James, Hanna and Blaine – Thank you!

Without further ado, here is a selection of some of my favourite pictures from 2014. These are all real moments taken without any interference or direction.

The Father of the Bride

A wedding is an emotional day, and not just for the bride and groom. It’s also an emotional day for the father of the bride. I can’t begin to imagine how proud a father must feel on this day; seeing his daughter looking the happiest and most beautiful she has ever looked in her life, watching her prepare for the moment she declares her love for one person and her commitment to spending the rest of her life with them, and then handing his daughter over to the care of that person. As a dad to two little girls myself [edit: now three little girls], I may one day get to experience this myself.

It doesn’t matter how many weddings I photograph, I never become immune to the emotion that’s present the moment a father walks his daughter down the aisle. And don’t even get me started on the father of the bride speech. It’s very rare that I don’t have to wipe even the smallest tear from my eye at this point.

I’d like to wish every father of the bride I have met, and every father of the bride I will meet in the future, a very happy Father’s Day. Here are a few little moments captured on real wedding days.

2012 – A year of wedding photography

2012. It was a busy old year. A pretty amazing year. I had the good fortune of photographing weddings in London, Kent, Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Worcestershire and Somerset, as well as destination weddings in Spain and Italy. I photographed weddings in a whole host of venues from city centre registry offices to quaint village churches, stately homes to castles. I photographed weddings, civil ceremonies and even a humanist ceremony. Rural weddings and urban ones. I photographed the weddings of couples I had never met, couples who have since become friends, and even the wedding of a friend and fellow documentary wedding photographer. I enjoyed some wonderful wedding food, stayed in some lovely places, laughed, danced and processed thousands of wedding photographs along the way. I even shed a few tears. It’s the speeches, they get me every time.

It’s always an honour for me when I’m asked to photograph a wedding. To be invited to the most intimate and special day of a couple’s life is not something I take lightly and I would like to thank each and every bride and groom for having me at their wedding. 2013 is looking very busy already and I’m looking forward to sharing some weddings from this year. But in the meantime, grab a cup of tea and flick through my overview of 2012. A year of documentary wedding photography.
